I am studying Japanese because I have always had an interest in learning many languages. I am interested in Japanese specifically mainly because my parents have been speaking it around the house my whole life. They spent three years living in Japan and are very proficient speakers. They used it as their "secret" language while my siblings and I were children. My parents speaking the language and their profuse praise of Japanese culture piqued my interest.
In addition, I have heard so many good things about Columbia's language programs that this seemed like the ideal time to learn it, even though it is a bit difficult to squeeze a 5 credit class in to my heavy course load. I hope to learn Japanese as well as I can and hopefully attend the Kyoto Consortium Summer Japanese Language Program after the 2018-2019 school year. I plan to take Japanese for the rest of my time at Columbia :)

ReplyDeleteI live in Kyoto, but I don't know about Kyoto Consortium Summer Japanese Program. That program will be held in Kyoto? If so, I'm happy to hear that!
なつみさん、はじめまして!Yes, the Kyoto Consortium for Japanese Studies is held every summer and has 13 participating universities, including Columbia University. The program offers modern and classical Japanese studies over an intensive summer session. It would be amazing to go:)
